Eco Moto values your business, and we want to make sure all of our customers are educated and informed BEFORE you make your investment. In an effort to educate you about motor scooters, we have provided this informational question and answer sheet for you.
What are you planning on using your scooter for?
Depending on how far you want to travel, the terrain of your commute (hills, high speed roads, etc.) and riding requirements (one rider, two riders, etc.), it will greatly influence the type and size of scooter you will need to purchase. We recommend a scooter from 100cc- 150cc for most commuting needs. A 150cc scooter will be able to handle higher speed roads, yet still feel agile in city commuting. Any scooter less than 100cc’s will struggle when driven more than 10 miles at one time. 49cc scooters work great cruising shorter distances and on slower speed roads, but they do not have enough power to travel and feel comfortable in 40+ mph roads. Smaller engine scooters (49cc) will also have a hard time keeping consistent power during extended riding. If you are needing to commute on the freeway we recommend scooters from 250cc to 500cc. These scooters will feel stable at high speeds, provide the power you need to drive comfortably on the freeway, and still get you great gas mileage.
How fast will you be traveling on your commute?
10” wheels are typical on most scooter models, and they are best suited for traveling 50mph or less for optimum control and comfort. We recommend purchasing a vehicle with larger tires (13” to 16”) if you are going to be traveling in excess of 50 mph during the majority of your commute. Larger wheels will provide a smoother ride, a higher top speed, and better controllability.
Will you ever be riding two people on your machine?
If so, we recommend you purchase a scooter of 100cc or excess. Scooters less than 100cc are best suited for 1 rider.
What do cc’s mean, and how is that going to affect my scooter?
CC means cubic centimeters of displacement. This is the measurement of power that is produced by your engine. The greater amount of cc’s that the engine produces, the more power the engine is going to produce.
What is the difference between two and four stroke engines?
Two stroke engines are similar to a weed wacker motor in design. The oil is automatically injected into the engine with your gas, so no pre-mixing is necessary. A two stroke engine is more powerful than a four stroke engine, but it does require more maintenance over the course of ownership, and it does pollute more. A four stroke engine has crankcase lubrication, and it is similar to a lawn mower engine in design. A four stroke engine has slightly less power than a two stroke, but you will get better gas mileage and less maintenance over the course of ownership. Typically, a 150cc four stroke scooter (Eco Moto does not sell any two strokes with engines in excess of 49cc) with have comparable gas mileage to a 49cc two stroke scooter. We recommend a four stroke engine for its longevity and fuel economy.
What kind of speed & gas mileage can I expect out of a particular engine size?
49cc- 40mph – 80-100mpg
125cc- 50 mph – 70-90mpg
150cc – 60mph – 60-80mpg
200cc – 75mph – 55-80mpg
250cc – 85mph – 55-80mpg
500cc – 100mph – 45-75mpg
What kind of maintenance can I expect, and how much will that cost?
All scooters require maintenance just like an automobile. We recommend you service your scooter at the specified mileage: 500, 1500, 3000, 5000, 7500, 1000, 1250, 1500, etc
Maintaining your scooter is essential to keep your machine running in tip top shape. Typically, general maintenance / oil change on a two stroke scooter costs $25 per visit. Maintenance on a 4 stroke scooter typically runs around $30 per visit.

A motorcycle endorsement is indefinitely required for 100cc and above. A motorcycle endorsement is very easy to obtain, it costs very little, and it will provide you with a wealth of knowledge to make you a better rider.
